Your number was 62 last night and 41 this morning. Nothing catastrophic happened in between. That kind of swing is normal, and understanding which parts of it are signal and which are noise is most of what makes the measurement useful rather than stressful.
HRV is not a stable trait like height. It is a snapshot of where your autonomic nervous system was during a particular window, and that moves constantly — with breathing, posture, time of day, temperature and whatever you were thinking about. Two readings taken the same morning under slightly different conditions can differ noticeably.
This is the thing to internalise before interpreting anything: a large day-to-day swing is the default behaviour of the measurement, not evidence that something happened. The useful signal lives in the trend across weeks, and in changes big enough to stand clear of that ordinary spread.
Short or broken sleep. The most reliable relationship most people notice. Less sleep, and particularly a disrupted night, tends to show up as a lower reading.
Alcohol. One of the few inputs where people see an effect clearly and consistently in their own data, often for more than one night afterwards.
Illness. A drop can precede your noticing symptoms, which is why people report their watch "knowing" before they did. Worth stating carefully: a low reading is not a test for anything, and plenty of low readings have nothing to do with illness.
Hard physical work. A demanding session leaves a training load that shows up afterwards. That is the system responding as expected, not a problem — the reading is describing the cost, not passing judgement.
Stress, and simply being anxious about the number. Anticipating a bad reading is itself an autonomic event. This is a real trap: checking anxiously can nudge the thing being checked.
Dehydration and heat. Both plausible, both usually modest next to sleep and alcohol.
Direction is not quality. A lower reading means your nervous system is in a more sympathetically dominant state right now. That is appropriate after a hard week, in the heat, or while fighting something off. It is a description of state, not a score of how well you are living.
A meaningful share of day-to-day variation is not physiology at all. It is inconsistency in how the reading was taken.
Before concluding that a drop means something about you, it is worth asking whether it means something about the reading. Holding the conditions steady removes a surprising amount of the mystery.
The inputs that raise HRV are mostly the absence of the ones that lower it: a full night's sleep, a few days without alcohol, an easy week after a hard one, recovery from an illness. There is no lever that reliably produces a jump, and treating a high reading as an achievement is the mirror image of treating a low one as a failure.
Slow breathing during a reading is the one exception worth knowing about, because it can raise the number substantially while you do it. That is a genuine physiological effect rather than a trick — but it does mean a reading taken while deliberately breathing slowly is not comparable to one taken while breathing normally, which is another argument for keeping conditions identical.
All of this is why an absolute number is close to meaningless in isolation. Healthy people differ enormously from one another, largely for reasons of age and physiology that no behaviour will change. A number that would be alarming for one person is an ordinary Tuesday for another.
What is interpretable is your reading against your recent history, collected the same way. That comparison holds most of the confounders still, and it is the only one where a change plausibly means something happened.
Usually: as one point. If it followed a short night, a late drink or a hard session, it has an obvious candidate explanation and no further interpretation is needed. If nothing obvious explains it, the reasonable response is to note it and carry on, because one point cannot distinguish a real change from ordinary spread.
What is worth attention is a run — several days below your usual range, especially alongside how you actually feel. That is the level at which the measurement earns its keep, and it is why the honest use of HRV is patient rather than reactive.
