Someone in the group chat posts a screenshot: 92 ms. Yours has been sitting around 38 all month. It is a natural thing to feel bad about and an almost entirely meaningless comparison — not because comparison is unkind, but because the two numbers are not measurements of the same thing on the same scale.
Resting HRV varies hugely across perfectly healthy adults. The gap between two well people of the same age can easily be larger than the entire range either of them will personally move through across a year of good and bad weeks. That is the crux of the problem: the between-person spread swamps the within-person signal.
Put differently — the difference between you and your friend tells you almost nothing, while the difference between you today and you last Tuesday tells you quite a lot. Comparing across people throws away the informative comparison in favour of the uninformative one.
This is not a hedge or a politeness. It is the reason there is no published "normal HRV" you can look yourself up in the way you can with blood pressure. Any chart claiming to tell you what your HRV should be for your age and sex is describing an average of an extremely wide distribution, and an average of a wide distribution does not describe anybody in particular.

This matters practically on Apple Watch, because watchOS records HRV opportunistically on its own schedule — often only a handful of times a day, under whatever conditions happened to prevail. You do not get to control when. Any app on the platform, Calmline included, can only work with what the watch chose to record. Screenshots travel between people using different hardware, and different wearables do not produce interchangeable numbers. They differ in the sensor, the sampling window, the filtering applied to discard beats that look wrong, and the specific HRV metric reported — SDNN and RMSSD are both legitimate and are not the same number. A chest strap and an optical wrist sensor are not measuring under equivalent conditions either.
So a friend's 92 may be a different statistic, over a different window, from a different sensor, at a different hour, in a different posture. Setting your own number next to it is not a comparison at all.

Once you drop the population comparison, HRV gets genuinely useful, because the confounders that ruin cross-person comparison mostly hold steady within a person. Your age, anatomy, sensor and typical sampling conditions are roughly constant from Tuesday to Wednesday. What changes is sleep, load, alcohol, illness, and whatever your week is doing to you — which is exactly the part you wanted to see.
A personal baseline turns an uninterpretable millisecond value into an interpretable statement: today is unusually low for you. That statement needs no population chart, no age bracket, and no idea whether 38 is a good number in the abstract.
Calmline never compares you to a population, because there is no population in the app to compare you to. The reference is the median of your own recent daily HRV averages, and the score is a simple ratio published in full on the how it works section of the home page:
Three design decisions follow from everything above. The baseline is a median rather than a mean, so a single wrecked night cannot drag your reference point for a week. The app refuses to show a score until it has at least three days of usable readings, saying calibrating instead of guessing. And the score is unitless and relative, so it never invites you to read a raw millisecond value as a grade.
There is also a privacy consequence that falls out of the same design. Because the only reference Calmline needs is your own history, there is nothing to send anywhere. No account, no server, no analytics — the app contains no networking client at all, which is why the privacy policy can make a claim stronger than a promise: your heart data cannot leave the device, because there is nowhere for it to go. Apps built around population percentiles and social comparison have a structural reason to collect your data. This one doesn't.
Instead of "is my HRV good?", ask "is today low for me, and if so, what is different?" That question has an answer you can act on, and it does not require knowing anyone else's numbers.
